AntaChat Desktop

Linux installation guide.

Install AntaChat on a 64-bit Linux computer using the Debian package or the portable AppImage.

Choose an installation format

Debian package

Recommended for Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint and other Debian-based distributions. It creates an application entry and can be updated or removed with your package manager.

Download the Debian package

AppImage

Portable format for most Linux distributions. It does not require a system-wide installation and can be kept in your home folder.

Download the AppImage

Before you start

Identify your Linux distribution and confirm that your computer is running a 64-bit Intel or AMD system:

cat /etc/os-release
uname -m

The expected output is x86_64. The current Linux release is built for x86-64/amd64.

Instructions by Linux distribution

Use the Debian package on Debian-family systems. For Fedora, Arch, openSUSE and other distributions, use the portable AppImage. The /latest/ links always point to the current release, so these commands stay the same after future updates.

Ubuntu, Debian and Linux Mint

Download the Debian package and install it from your Downloads folder:

cd ~/Downloads
curl -fL https://download.antachat.com/linux/Debian/latest/AntaChat.deb -o AntaChat.deb
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ./AntaChat.deb

Fedora, RHEL, Rocky and AlmaLinux

Use the AppImage. Install common desktop dependencies only if your system asks for them:

sudo dnf install gtk3 libnotify nss libXScrnSaver libXtst xdg-utils at-spi2-atk libuuid libsecret
cd ~/Downloads
curl -fL https://download.antachat.com/linux/Appimage/latest/AntaChat.AppImage -o AntaChat.AppImage
chmod +x ./AntaChat.AppImage
./AntaChat.AppImage

Arch Linux and Manjaro

Use the AppImage and install common runtime libraries if required:

sudo pacman -S --needed gtk3 libnotify nss libxss libxtst xdg-utils at-spi2-core libsecret
cd ~/Downloads
curl -fL https://download.antachat.com/linux/Appimage/latest/AntaChat.AppImage -o AntaChat.AppImage
chmod +x ./AntaChat.AppImage
./AntaChat.AppImage

openSUSE

Use the AppImage and install common runtime libraries if required:

sudo zypper install gtk3 libnotify Mozilla-nss libXss1 libXtst6 xdg-utils at-spi2-atk libuuid1 libsecret-1-0
cd ~/Downloads
curl -fL https://download.antachat.com/linux/Appimage/latest/AntaChat.AppImage -o AntaChat.AppImage
chmod +x ./AntaChat.AppImage
./AntaChat.AppImage

Other distributions

The AppImage is the general portable option for distributions not listed above:

cd ~/Downloads
curl -fL https://download.antachat.com/linux/Appimage/latest/AntaChat.AppImage -o AntaChat.AppImage
chmod +x ./AntaChat.AppImage
./AntaChat.AppImage

Option 1: Install the Debian package

Download and install the current Debian package with one repeatable command:

cd ~/Downloads
curl -fL https://download.antachat.com/linux/Debian/latest/AntaChat.deb -o AntaChat.deb
sudo apt install ./AntaChat.deb

Start AntaChat from your application menu, or run:

antachat-desktop

If apt cannot install the package

Use dpkg, then repair any missing dependencies:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo dpkg -i ./AntaChat.deb
sudo apt-get -f install

Update a Debian installation

Run the same download and install command again whenever a new release is available:

cd ~/Downloads
curl -fL https://download.antachat.com/linux/Debian/latest/AntaChat.deb -o AntaChat.deb
sudo apt install ./AntaChat.deb

Uninstall

sudo apt remove antachat-desktop

Option 2: Run the AppImage

Download the current AppImage, make it executable, and start it:

cd ~/Downloads
curl -fL https://download.antachat.com/linux/Appimage/latest/AntaChat.AppImage -o AntaChat.AppImage
chmod +x ./AntaChat.AppImage
./AntaChat.AppImage

You can keep the file in your Downloads folder, or move it into a personal applications folder:

mkdir -p ~/.local/bin
mv ./AntaChat.AppImage ~/.local/bin/antachat
chmod +x ~/.local/bin/antachat
~/.local/bin/antachat

Optional: add the AppImage to your application menu

Create a desktop entry pointing to the AppImage in ~/.local/bin:

mkdir -p ~/.local/share/applications
cat > ~/.local/share/applications/antachat.desktop <<'EOF'
[Desktop Entry]
Name=AntaChat
Comment=Private chats, calls and shared moments
Exec=/home/YOUR_USERNAME/.local/bin/antachat
Icon=antachat
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Network;Chat;
EOF
update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications 2>/dev/null || true

Replace YOUR_USERNAME with your Linux username. If you move the AppImage later, update the Exec path.

Update or remove the AppImage

To update, replace the file with the new AppImage and run chmod +x again. To remove it:

rm ~/.local/bin/antachat
rm ~/.local/share/applications/antachat.desktop
update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications 2>/dev/null || true

Linux dependencies

The Debian installer declares the required desktop libraries. If your distribution reports a missing library, install the common Ubuntu/Debian dependencies with:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install libgtk-3-0 libnotify4 libnss3 libxss1 libxtst6 xdg-utils libatspi2.0-0 libuuid1 libsecret-1-0 libappindicator3-1

On Fedora-based distributions, the equivalent commonly used packages are:

sudo dnf install gtk3 libnotify nss libXScrnSaver libXtst xdg-utils at-spi2-atk libuuid libsecret libappindicator-gtk3

Troubleshooting

AppImage says that FUSE is unavailable

Install the FUSE compatibility library:

sudo apt install libfuse2

On newer Ubuntu releases, the package may be named libfuse2t64. Do not run the application with --no-sandbox unless you fully understand the security consequences.

The app does not appear in the application menu

Refresh the desktop entry cache, then log out and back in if needed:

update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications 2>/dev/null || true

Check that the downloaded files are intact
